Chapter 979 – Matching
Verda was dumbfounded.
This man is so spineless.
How could he tattle in front of her parents?
And, she was the one who was being bullied.
“Xander, are you still a man?” Verda couldn’t bear it anymore.
Xander looked like a bullied wife.
Very aggrieved, not daring to say a word.
Otis immediately scolded his daughter, “What nonsense are you talking about? It’s because I’ve spoiled you too much that you don’t know your limits. Hurry up and apologize to Xander.”
Verda’s face flushed with anger, “He’s the one bullying me.”
“How did he bully you? We only saw you being irritable,” Otis said. “Apologize to Xander quickly.”
“I won’t.” Verda refused to apologize.
She has never apologized to anyone all her life.
Especially not to a man who wrongly accused her. This is property © NôvelDrama.Org.
“Xander!” Verda’s chest heaved with anger. “Do you have any shame left?”
Xander immediately looked scared. “No need to apologize, no need to apologize, it’s okay, I’m used to it. Uncle and Aunt, please don’t be angry.”
Otis gave his daughter a stern look. “I will teach you a lesson later.”
“Xander, let’s go downstairs first.”
Xander nodded.
Otis followed Xander, signaling to his wife, “You stay here and talk to her nicely. She’s grown up now and should be sensible. Don’t drive my son-in-law away. Where will we find another one like him?”
Hannah nodded. “Don’t worry, you take care of our son-in-law.”
Otis said, “I will.”
“Do you know how to play chess?” Otis asked Xander.
Xander replied, “Yes.”
“Let’s play two games together?” Otis asked for his opinion.
Xander said, “Sure.”
Upstairs.
Hannah held her daughter’s hand. “What’s wrong with you?”
Verda said angrily, “Can’t you see? Is he doing this deliberately?”
Hannah smiled. “Maybe he thinks you’re too headstrong and wants to teach you a lesson.”
Verda paused.
If he was really her boyfriend and had issues with her, trying to change her personality, she could understand.
But Xander was just someone she brought in temporarily.
Not a real boyfriend.
Is he really doing this on purpose?
Verda knew that Xander was deliberately provoking her.
She took a deep breath and smiled at her mother. “Mom, don’t worry, I won’t argue with him anymore.”
She just had to endure until lunch and she could get rid of him.
Hannah held her daughter’s hand, speaking earnestly. “Verda, I don’t think Xander is a bad person. He’s capable and would be a good match for our family. You must cherish this opportunity. It’s hard to find the right person, rejecting one means missing out on one.”
Verda nodded absently. “Mom, I understand.”
Hannah held her daughter’s hand tighter. “Your father and I won’t be with you forever. While we’re still alive, we want to see you find a reliable man to rely on. That way we can rest assured.”
Verda looked at her mother.
Suddenly, she hugged her mother. “Mom, what are you saying? You and dad will live a long and healthy life.”
Hannah patted her daughter’s back. “Even if we live long, you have to let us leave this world peacefully.”
Verda covered her mother’s mouth. “Stop saying such ominous things. Don’t say that.”
Hannah smiled.
Downstairs.
Otis played the red pieces, Xander the black pieces.
They were currently playing a game, and if Otis made one wrong move, Xander would capture his rook.
Otis looked at the chessboard and asked Xander, “Is your company busy right now?”
Xander replied, “Yes.”
“With the various industries involved in Tianju, you must have assisted Elijah in handling many things?” Otis was testing Xander.
Xander answered, “I have learned a lot from Mr. Silverton.”
“You have the ability too, otherwise you wouldn’t have earned Elijah’s favor.” Otis looked at Xander, very satisfied with his answer.
He wasn’t arrogant.
He knew humility and answered concisely.
Otis didn’t like overly impulsive men.
Such men couldn’t achieve much.
“What do you think of our Verda?” Otis asked again.
Xander pondered for a moment. “She’s great.”
Otis smiled. “She’s stubborn.”
As he made his move, he not only avoided Xander’s attack but also directly threatened Xander’s king.
If Xander made a wrong move, he would lose.
Xander stared at the chessboard.
Otis looked at Xander. “My daughter is spoiled and pampered, never experienced hardships. Although her character isn’t perfect, she is pure and kind.”
Xander could feel it.
Otis and mother must have a loving relationship, creating a good family atmosphere.
Growing up in such a family, Verda, despite her spoiled nature, wouldn’t have ill intentions.
Only when one is well-protected can they maintain a pure and kind heart.
“In today’s society, such girls are rare.”
Many have been tainted by society.
Their hearts have changed long ago.
Otis nodded. “Indeed, by spoiling her too much, it’s not good either. We can’t rest assured of her safety.”
Xander looked puzzled.
Otis quickly laughed it off. “Just kidding, just kidding.”
Xander made a move, avoiding an attack but losing another piece.
“My daughter is actually quite good.” Otis said.
Xander spoke the truth, not seeing any major flaws in Verda.
But they were from different backgrounds, so he didn’t think much of it.
“She is quite good.”
Otis said, “Consider it carefully?”
Xander looked up.
Otis’ smile was mysterious.
Xander also smiled.
They both understood each other without saying a word.
Otis had been navigating the business world for most of his life. How could he not see through his daughter’s little tricks?
But he chose not to expose them.
He really liked Xander.
By saying these words, he hoped that Xander could get along well with his daughter.
What if they were a good match?
“I may be Mr. Silverton’s assistant, but that’s just a title. I came from a rural background and only gained my position through Mr. Silverton’s favor,” Xander explained.
Otis shook his head. “Heroes come from all backgrounds.”
“You’re too kind,” Xander humbly replied.
“No, you have the ability, which is why Elijah favors you. Not everyone can seize opportunities or succeed. You’re here today because of your own skills. If you were useless, Elijah wouldn’t keep you around.”
Otis knew.
A person without skills, regardless of Elijah, would not be valued by him.
A successful person is never accidental.
“Dad, what are you talking about?” Verda walked over with tea.
She sat down and poured tea.
Xander glanced at her.
Verda glared at him.
Xander smiled.
Otis looked at the two of them and felt more and more that they were a perfect match.
He really hoped they could make it work.
Verda served tea to her father and Xander.
“This is my dad’s special tea, he usually doesn’t even let me see it. How big is your face for him to secretly give it to you?” she joked.
Xander said, “I’ll enjoy it.”
He picked up the tea cup and took a few sips. He might not be a connoisseur, but he felt the rich flavor of the tea and the lingering aroma after swallowing.
