Delilah couldn’t fathom why that woman would suddenly take an interest in the Davis family, but it surely wasn’t out of goodwill. Precaution was necessary.
Time flew, and on Wednesday, Mirabella received a text from Johnny asking her to come by after school for a follow–up check on Owen. She had previously agreed to a second visit, and with no other plans after classes, she texted back a simple [Ok.]
At five o’clock, as Mirabella stepped out of Parkside High School, a horn honked from a black sedan parked on the road. A man clad in a stark black suit with a stern demeanor stepped out. He approached Mirabella directly, offering a polite nod. “Ms. Mirabella, Mr. Johnny is waiting for you in the car.” Johnny had made it clear to his bodyguard to treat Mirabella with utmost respect. Mirabella gave the man a cursory glance, acknowledging him with a faint hum.

The bodyguard gestured invitingly towards the car. Smoothing her shoulder bag, Mirabella walked over without hesitation.
The black sedan wasn’t exactly a luxury car, but a closer look revealed modifications especially the windows, which were bulletproof. The bodyguard courteously opened the rear door for her. Mirabella diverted her thoughtful gaze and promptly slid into the backseat. Johnny was seated in the front passenger seat. As soon as she got in, hè greeted her warmly, “Ms. Mirabella, I appreciate you making the trip.”
Mirabella straightened up and replied with a light affirmation before adding, “I’m not doing this for nothing, you know.”
