Chapter 823
Chapter 823
Kurt stopped in his tracks, looking at her gloomily.
“How am I inferior to him? Why is it that all these years, you've only had eyes for him and not me? I might feel better if your efforts were reciprocated, but what has he given you in return for everything you did for him? In his eyes, you're nothing but a nuisance! All he wants is to stay away from you!”
Blaze retreated until she was backed against the floor-to-ceiling window with no way out. Her only option was to pull the dagger out of her pocket and use it to defend herself.
“You're no match for him in any way. He's honorable and upright, while you're evil and terrifying. Besides, you're nothing more than a dog reared by the Yablon family. Who do you think you are to compare with him? He is the young heir of the Yablon family, born with a silver spoon in his mouth. I'm still willing to pursue him even if he doesn't love me, because—”
“Enough!” Kurt squeezed out the word through gritted teeth, his voice resembling the roar of a beast. Copyright by Nôv/elDrama.Org.
The one thing he couldn't tolerate was Blaze comparing him with Cameron.
Alas, what she said was true. He was indeed inferior to the other man.
That's right. Cameron was born privileged, and no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to surpass him. It's already bad enough that he's way ahead of me in terms of poison-crafting, worse still, he has also taken the woman I love away from me. However, what I can't tolerate the most is the fact that he doesn't appreciate her after winning her heart. He tramples on her sincerity without a care in the world.
“The only thing that sets him apart from me is our difference in status. In what other ways am I inferior
to him?”
Blaze scoffed. “He learns poison-crafting to save people, while you learn it solely to harm others. That's the fundamental difference. Kurt, the Yablon family has been treating you well, haven't they? The head of the family has taught you everything he could. He treated both you and Cameron fairly and imparted his knowledge to both of you without any bias. He didn't favor Cameron just because he's his son. But what did you give him in return for his kindness? Not only did you betray the Yablon family, but you also stole the Yablon family's prohibited drug, Soul Reaper. You even took away the core of the family's heritage, the Encyclopedia of Poison. I'd be an idiot if I were to fall for someone as ungrateful and disloyal as you. How dare you have the audacity to ask me how you fall short compared to Cameron? Tell me, in what way do you think you can surpass him?”
The veins on Kurt's forehead bulged as he recklessly charged toward her.
Blaze's gaze hardened, and she swiftly waved her hand, sending a surge of dark energy rushing into his nostrils.
He abruptly halted, staring at her in disbelief, his eyes ablaze with rage.
“We've known each other for so many years. How could you poison me?”
Blaze swiftly moved aside to avoid inhaling the poison herself and sneered. “Why should I go easy on an ungrateful wretch like you? The poison in you is identical to that in those old geezers out there. Considering our acquaintance, I will give you the antidote recipe once I return. You'd better not show your face around me in the future, or every time I see you, I'll poison you until you're dead.”
After she finished speaking, she turned around and walked outside.
The elders who were waiting by the entrance saw her come out and immediately surrounded her.
“Poison Lady, hand over the antidote, or we won't let you leave!”
“That's right! Hand over the antidote.”
Tucker rushed into the living room to see Kurt slumping weakly in a chair. Frowning, he asked, “Have you been poisoned too? She didn't give you the antidote?”
Kurt shot him a cold glance and enunciated every word slowly, “I want to make this woman mine. You should be able to help me with that, right?”
Tucker arched his eyebrows slightly and chuckled. “No wonder you refused to hook up with Bailey when I told you to. Turns out you already have someone in your heart. It's just a woman. I'll figure out a way to help you with that. No biggie. By the way, have you gotten the antidote?”
The fierce look in Kurt's eyes faded away as he said calmly, “Let her go. She will give me the formula for the antidote.”
Tucker furrowed his brows, “Are you sure? So many lives are at stake. This can't be taken lightly.”
“Don't worry. She will. It's useless even if you keep her here. No one can get her to talk if she refuses to.”
Though still worried, Tucker didn't say anything further after hearing Kurt's words.
“All right. I'll trust you this time.”
In a mansion in the suburbs, Sofie was chatting with Holden over a video call in the study.
“Mr. Lewitt, now that the leader of Tarragon is dead and there's no one at the helm, why do you still refuse to give up? How about this? Activate Tarragon's defense system and allow my men to break in. Once it's done, I'll still let you be in charge. What do you say?”
On the screen, Holden was lazily leaning against the couch with a glass of red wine in his hand. Wearing a half-smile, he said, “You're right. Tarragon's leader is dead, and the empire is now without a ruler. If I'm a bit more assertive, I'd certainly be able to become the next leader. Rather than being a subordinate, I'd much prefer to be a leader above all.”
Sofie burst out laughing, “I never expected you to be so ambitious that you've been eyeing the leader's position all along, Mr. Lewitt. But unfortunately, not long ago, I had the pleasure of hosting a beautiful lady from Aploth. As we chatted, I discovered she was your lover, and she even bore you a son. As a compassionate man, I'm sure you won't mistreat a woman who had once been intimate with you and had even borne you a child, right?”
After she finished speaking, she clapped her hands in the direction of the door.
Next, the door was pushed open, and two black-clad bodyguards escorted a young woman in.
Having been confined in a pitch-black basement for some time, Wendy appeared extremely haggard and disheveled.
Holden furrowed his brows slightly, tightening his grip on the wine glass in his hand.
“You sure have some tricks up your sleeve, Ms. Carr.”
Sofie gave a soft chuckle, saying, “You flatter me.” Then she stood up, walked over to Wendy, and removed the tape over her mouth.
“Despite her current disheveled state, this woman was once the legitimate eldest daughter of the Hoffman family, the designated heiress. Later, she married media tycoon Lionel. Her son, on the other hand, was the offspring of Holden, the man in charge of Tarragon. Her life could be described as nothing short of legendary. A woman like her, if thrown into the nightclub, would surely attract many to pay for her company for a night. After all, she is a noble princess and the beloved confidant of two powerful men.”
Pausing mid-sentence, she looked at Holden, smiling widely as she continued, “Both the Hoffman family and Lionel have abandoned her, so, Mr. Lewitt, if you're not interested in her as well, I'll throw her to the nightclub. At least that way, she could earn me some money.”
Holden ignored her and looked at Wendy. With a trembling voice, he asked, “Are you okay?”
Tears shimmered in Wendy's eyes as she croaked, “My affairs are none of your business. You don't need to concern yourself with me.”
Slap!
Sofie gave her a hard slap across the cheek. “You ignorant fool! Do you know who this man is? He's
the future leader of the world's most powerful organization. Who gave you the right to make decisions for him?”
