Chapter 2
Three days later, at 10 p.m., Selena had just set her phone down and was ready to drift off to sleep when it buzzed with a notification. It was from Everett. His message was blunt: [Come get me,] followed by an address. He'd been at a party and, judging by past events, But this felt different. probably had a bit too much to drink. Selena had fetched him on similar occasions before.
After a moment's hesitation, Selena got up, changed, and headed out. When things feel off, there's usually a reason. Sure enough, as soon as she stepped into the private room, the lights went out, leaving the space pitch black.
Instinctively, she called out, "Everett?" But instead of a familiar voice, someone grabbed her from behind, their grip strong and unyielding. The stench of alcohol was overwhelming, making her skin crawl. This wasn't Everett!
She struggled, but his hold was too tight. The stranger pressed against her neck, and revulsion surged through her. "Get off!" she yelled, trying to sound calm. "I'm Everett Bennett's wife! Touch me, and he won't let you get away with it!" Normally, the name "Bennett" was enough to send anyone running. The family was a powerhouse in Newport. But in the darkness, the man just sneered, continuing his unwanted advance.
Desperately, Selena's hand found something solid. Without thinking, she swung it, connecting hard with his forehead. He dropped with a howl, disbelief written all over his face. This wasn't the meek Mrs. Bennett he'd expected. Selena kicked him a couple more times for good measure, then bolted for the door, her heart racing. As she ran, she fumbled for her phone, speed-dialing Everett.
The dialing tone buzzed in her ear. But before Everett picked up, she overheard a conversation from the smoking area nearby. "The chick who went in? Absolute stunner. Those legs are so long. The boss hit the jackpot."
"That's Mrs. Bennett, a real treasure. Our boss has always liked married women and has been eyeing her for ages. He's even willing to lose 30% in the deal with Bennett Corp, just for a night with her!" "Everett's that generous?"
"Everyone knows Everett doesn't care for the wife he was saddled with. He's got someone else on the side and is just waiting for the right excuse to ditch her and make his real love official."
No wonder that guy didn't back off when she warned him...
Selena froze, the harsh lights casting a ghostly pallor over her face.
Everett never answered. The autumn chill was nothing compared to the icy reality closing in on her. She sat on the steps outside, stubbornly redialing until her phone battery was nearly dead. Finally, he picked up.
His voice, usually deep and smooth, was edged with impatience. "What do you want?"
Selena held onto a shred of hope, wanting to ask what the hell had happened tonight. "You..." But a soft voice interrupted from his end, "Everett..."
Selena's question died on her lips. It was obvious now. He'd traded her like a pawn to a business partner while he enjoyed a cozy night with his mistress. Her heart, already battered, finally broke.
Selena let out a bitter laugh, no longer holding back her anger. "Everett, your hobbies are really something else. Enjoy being a

"Selena!" Everett's voice cracked, full of frustration.
But Selena had made up her mind. She was done. "Just so you know, you cowardly bastard, I'm divorcing you, and I'm taking half of everything!"
