Chapter 61
After rejoining the birthday celebration, the maid led Madelyn
upstairs. Memories of her past life made her instantly wary, Glancing around, Madelyn didn't see Andrew. She asked the maid in a solemn tone, "Where are we going?"
"Mr. Miller requested that I bring you straight to the study," the maid responded.
Madelyn fell silent. She was familiar with the Miller residence, and after already removing Harriet and Sophie from it, she felt there shouldn't be any issues.
When Madelyn and the maid reached the study, they found the door slightly open. Inside, they could hear Athena's voice raised in anger, punctuated by the sounds of sobbing. "Just go! I'm done with you!" Madelyn frowned.
The maid turned to her. "Ms. Sinclair is in there."
Natalie?
Madelyn finally understood why Andrew had sent the maid to fetch her to the study. She gestured for the maid to leave, took a deep
breath, and knocked on the door.
"Come in!" Athena's tone was still curt, clearly in a foul mood.
Madelyn opened the door and saw Natalie kneeling on the floor. She was startled.
When Athena spotted Madelyn, she paused briefly. Then, her stern demeanor softened slightly. "Maddie, what brings you here? You should be with Andrew. I have a few things to attend to." Madelyn
'n't been in such a situation before and felt unsure of her
next move. Nodding, she said, "I'll be leaving soon with Andrew."
"Alright, go ahead," Athena replied, not stopping her.
Madelyn stayed where she was, asking, "Grandma, did Andrew give you the gift?"
Tonight's birthday celebration had been filled with extravagant presents, and Athena had specifically arranged for someone to deliver Andrew and Madelyn's gift straight to her room.
Athena stayed quiet. Madelyn moved forward to retrieve the broken gift box from the floor. "Is this Natalie's present for you, Grandma?"
Natalie, on her knees, seemed deathly pale. Her celebrity persona had faded, replaced by a modest presence shadowed by sorrow.
Madelyn approached Athena with the gift box. She opened it, revealing a pair of exquisite emerald bracelets. "Grandma, these are absolutely beautiful. It seems Natalie really put her heart into this." "Maddie." Athena glanced at Madelyn, then paused before deciding not to press further. Turning to Natalie, who was kneeling before her, Athena said with solemnity, "I'll take the gift. You may go." "Thank you, Grandma," Natalie responded softly, feeling relief as Athena accepted her gift. She couldn't risk losing the Millers' backing at this critical juncture. Athena's acceptance of her gift signaled a tentative Natalie stood up and gave Athena a respectful nod before quietly exiting the study.
Only Athena and Madelyn remained. Athena looked at Madelyn fondly, saying, "My dear, perhaps you've been sheltered too much in
our care."© 2024 Nôv/el/Dram/a.Org.
The comment held a significant undertone that Madelyn couldn't fully understand. Athena seemed hesitant to explain further. After a brief conversation, Athena let Madelyn go
Madelyn looked around the birthday celebration for Andrew but
couldn't spot him, so she made her way to the garden at the back of the house. The surroundings were dimly lit and quiet, save for the distant sound of weeping carried on the breeze. Madelyn strained to lister Reflecting on how Athena had treated Natalie in the study moments before, Madelyn empathized with Natalie's distress. She planned to offer some words of comfort, but as she rounded the corner, she caught Madelyn stopped in her tracks. A wave of fury coursed through her entire body.
Natalie was sobbing uncontrollably in Andrew's arms. "Andrew, thank you for getting someone to help me. How could Grandma treat me that way? I didn't do anything wrong!"
Andrew sent someone to help her?
Madelyn felt a wave of nausea at Natalie's sweet yet plaintive tone, She turned abruptly and strode away, accidentally stepping on something that creaked underfoot! Yet, she continued on her path without pau
