Chase stopped when he was about to enter the car and turned towards the entrance of the hospital building to find Saige standing there, still on a hospital dress.
She rushed to him, ignoring the nurses running behind her to stop her. She stopped in front of him with a smile before hurling herself into his arms.
“Saige,”
“Thank you,” She pressed her face deeper into his chest. “You- you came for me. You came,”
Chase placed his hands on her shoulders and pushed her away. “You refused to see a therapist after I told you to do so,”
“I couldn’t,” She moved closer. “I- a therapist won’t help me. Only you can. Only you can help me,”
“You’re out of your mind,”
“I’m not out of my mind,” She placed her right palm on his left cheek. “I’m in love. I’m in love with you, Chase. I love you,”
Chase held her wrists in his palms and pulled them away. “Don’t tempt me to do something you’ll hate, Saige. See a therapist and make things easier for yourself and your father,”
“If I see a therapist, they’ll think I’m mad! Everyone would think that I’m mad!” She yelled. “Don’t you get it? Seeing a therapist means I’m out of my mind, and I’m not mad. I’m not out of my mind. I’m perfectly okay. It’s just the fact that Sophia is always around you that makes me behave like this. She’s the cause of all my insecurities,”
“So what do you want now?” He asked, narrowing his eyes at her. “What do you want me to do?”
“Marry me soon,” She pleaded at the verge of tears. “Cha -Don, marry me. I promise I’ll do anything you say without complaint. I- I’ll see a therapist. I’ll do anything you ask me to do,”
“You need rest, Saige,” Chase sighed. “Have some rest. We’ll talk this through once you’re okay,”
“I’m okay enough for this conversation,” She said. “All you have to do is say yes,”
Chase motioned for the nurses to come over and take her back inside the hospital.
“Don’t do this to me, please,” She cried as they struggled to drag her in. “Chase, please. Don’t do this ”
Her wails filled the surrounding as she was pierced with an injection to make her fall asleep. Once she was unconscious, Saige was placed on a stretcher before taken back into the building.
Without acknowledging De Luca, Chase turned to enter his car.
“Don,”
Chase stopped and turned to him. “Che cosa?”
{“What?”}
De Luca clasped his hands together and stepped closer, tears glistening in his eyes. “Look at the condition my daughter is in. She needs help,”
“Find her a therapist, De Luca,”
De Luca shook his head. “She’s only going to see one if you give her what she wants and she only wants to be with you. Please, give my daughter the happiness she deserves. I can’t bear to see my daughter in this mess. I can’t bear it. It’s hurting,”
“I’m already getting married to her, De Luca. There’s nothing to worry about. All she needs at the moment is a therapist,” Chase insisted.
“Saige is stubborn, Don. She won’t see one if you don’t get married to her sooner than expected. I can’t lose my daughter. I’m scared she’s going to do something worse and I won’t be there to save her like I did today. Please, Don. My daughter’s life depends on you. Without you, she is nothing. Please don’t do this to her,”
Chase’s eyes narrowed into slits. “De-,”
De Luca cut him off. “I’ll do all I can for you to get married to my daughter, Don. I’ll grovel at your feet for my daughter’s happiness. Please, give her what she wants,”
“I don’t want you groveling for something as petty as that, De Luca,” Chase said. “I have a lot of respect for you and making you beg won’t help boost my ego so I won’t let you do that. However, I’ll think about the whole marriage issue,”

“Chase,”
Chase stopped at the sound of Sophia’s voice and turned to face her. She was standing by the kitchen door, wearing one of his button-down shirt and a woolen sock.
She walked towards him, her small petite body swallowed by the shirt. Once she reached him, her smile widened. “You said you’d be back home immediately. Its late in the night,”
“I know,” Chase replied. “Important work came up at the warehouse. That’s why I took longer than expected,”
“OH,” She tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear. “How’s she? How’s Saige?”
Chase’s mood dropped. “She’s fine now,”
“It’s good to hear that she’s okay now,” Sophia passed him a small smile.
“Why are you still up by this time?” Chase looked at his wristwatch. “It’s late, and you should be in bed,”
“I was waiting for you,”
“You shouldn’t have,” He replied.
“I wanted to,” She said. “I was bored, and since no one was home, I made something for the both of us,”
Chase lifted a brow. “What’s that?”
“Nothing big. Come,” She clasped their hands together and dragged him towards the kitchen. She opened the fridge and brought out the tray of cupcakes on it. “See,”
“You made cupcakes,” He said. “They look nice,”
“Won’t you try them out?” She tilted her head to the side. “Nana taught me how to make nice cupcakes. I’m sure you’ll love them. I made them all in different flavors,”
“No, thanks,” He pecked her cheeks. “I don’t take sugar,”
“At all?” She asked, her mood dropping.
“Nope,” He smiled at her. “Okay, let’s do this,” He pinched her cheeks when he noticed her foul mood. “Why don’t you package them for me? I’ll have them all tomorrow at the warehouse,”
“Really?” Her eyes lit up. “You won’t give them to the workers?”
“Nope,” He replied, a hidden meaning behind his next words. “I don’t share what’s mine,”
Sophia blushed and moved closer to him, standing on her toes to peck his cheeks. “I love you,”
“Gattina,”
{“Kitten”}
“Don’t you feel the same way about me?” She asked, her eyes searching his. “Didn’t you always love me?”
“Fuck, Gattina,” Chase closed his eyes. It was then, or never. “There was never meant to be love between us,” He opened his eyes again.
{“Kitten”}
“What do you mean?” Tears welled up in her eyes. “What then did we share all those times? What did all that sex mean?”
Chase shrugged and cupped her cheeks. “You have to understand what I’m saying, Sophia, that love doesn’t exist in this world we live in. I can’t love you,”
She staggered on her feet, and his hands fell at his sides. A lone tear fell down her cheeks, and her heart constricted with pain as if she had been stabbed in the heart. “You- you- you’re lying,”
Chase sighed. “You’re naive, Sophia, that’s why you can’t understand, but with time, you will definitely understand why I can’t love you,”
“But I love you,” She whispered, clutching her chest as if to rip off her heart as she slid down on the ground. “I love you,”
“No, Sophia. You don’t love me,” He knelt down in front of her and cupped her cheeks, making her stare at him in the eye. “You don’t love me. It’s just a normal teenage infatuation. You’ll realize that, and everything will go back to the way it used to be,”
She shook her head. “Don’t say so about my feelings. I love you so much,”
Chase leaned in and stole a short kiss from her lips. “No, you don’t. You’re only infatuated,”
“Don’t say that, chase,” She held his wrists in her small palms. “You’re breaking my heart. It hurts. Please stop,”
Chase pulled his hands away from her and wrapped his arms around her. “I want to, but I can’t stop. If I stop, I’m scared you might end up like Saige. I don’t want you to end up like her,” He whispered against her hair as she hugged him back. “You don’t love me. You don’t know anything about love. I’m not the one for you,”
