Chapter 68
Hunting had been great. We had both shifted for the first time in a while and being in our wild forms was truly freeing. In those moments, we were carefree and happy, with no responsibilities or weight on our shoulders.
But of course, all good things must come to an end.
A sense of deja vu hit me, stealing the breath out of my lungs and wiping the smile off my face. My vision blurring in an out of focus and the sudden chill in my body let me know I was being shown another vision, and despite my attempts to fight it, I was transported unwillingly to another time and another place.
I could tell it lasted a while and much like last time, I came out gasping, choking on screams and tears.
I was once again shown that same vision of my parents' brutal murder and the massacre of their people.
Kieran sat with me on the ground, holding me and petting my hair, murmuring sweet nothings as I slowly came back to reality.
"I guess it's back to work huh?" I chuckled bitterly, slightly leaning back to look at Kieran. He sighed, lips pursed.
"I contacted your uncle earlier. He's waiting in the pack house," His words surprised me.
"Why did you do that?" I wasn't annoyed or anything, just rather curious as to why my uncle was needed.NôvelDrama.Org content rights.
"I'm worried about you and these visions," he admitted softly, stroking my face. His thumb pressed lightly on my forehead, where my brow was creased and I sighed, pursing my own lips and dropping the frown that had unconsciously stuck.
"We should go back then," I murmured. He nodded, standing up and helping me and we walked back out of the woods silently, in much worse spirits than when we walked in.
Goddess I couldn't wait till these hunters were gone and I'd be able to relax with my mate.
We both entered the pack house and thankfully, I didn't have to look for my uncle. He stepped into the reception area, a large warm smile on his face and his arms wide open.
I embraced him, inhaling his spicy scent and only realising at that moment just how much I had missed him.
Why did I wait so long to see him?
We both broke from the embrace and took a moment to analyse each other. He looked a little older, a few wrinkles around his eyes more defined than I last remembered but he had a light twinkle in his dark irises that wasn't there last time. "You look well Uncle. I take it you and Cora are happy?" I teased.
"I should be saying that to you. Tell me, when are the pups coming?" I blinked at him owlishly, caught off guard by his question. I heard Kieran cough to hide his chuckle besides me. Before I could come up with a response, he brushed it off with a wave of his hands, suddenly gripping both my hands in his.
"That's not why I'm here though. Your mate spoke of these visions you've been getting," I nodded solemnly, the vision still fresh in my mind from a only a couple moments ago.
"Yes. Shall we take this to the office?" He nodded and the three of us walked towards the office, settling in the soundproof room for privacy. I settled on the sofa besides him while Kieran stood opposite us.
"I keep seeing the day the Silverclaws were massacred. My vision focuses mainly on my parents and a specific group of hunters," I began. His face hardened at my revelation, and he nodded thoughtfully.
"It seems the spirits of the fallen are restless. That's why you keep getting the vision. They want justice," His explanation didn't make anything better, if anything just raised more questions.
"I have to find these hunters and kill them," I stated, not even wording it like a question since I knew from the previous night what I had to do.
"Yes Mija," He confirmed.
Kieran had kindly pulled out my sketch and handed it to my uncle.
"This is the face of the leader. I didn't catch a name but I learned from my visions that he was looking for me too," I continued.
My uncle looked thoughtful, but I saw his eyes widen a fraction with understanding. He stared at the picture I drew for a while, rubbing his beard distractedly. He eyes were slightly glazed over, probably stuck in the memory of that tragic day. "McConor," He murmured. I didn't interrupt his thoughts and let him continue speaking at his own pace. "That was the family name of the hunters. I know this because they'd leave their symbol wherever they went," he continued.
"It was a universal sign of death," he paused, placing the sketch down on the table before turning towards me.
"I never thought much of it, I thought it was a rumour," he shook his head to himself.
"What was a rumour?" I asked, once his pause was too long for my liking.
"The reason they were looking for you. Baby Cynthia," I sometimes forgot that my middle name was essentially my real first name, but I had taken the name Diana had given me once I found her and went with it.
It suited me better I thought.
Plus, ever since I learnt of my parents' death, I believed that Cynthia had died with them. I was someone else now.
I shook off my thoughts to focus back on the present.
"There was a rumour saying that the hunters had consulted a witch, so she could read their future," He began. "The used the witch to help them make their tactical decisions. It was no secret that they wanted to wipe out all supernaturals," "But the witch saw something in her vision. She predicted a young Gifted werewolf would wipe them all out and destroy their legacy," I raised my brow at this.
"So once they heard a Gifted would be their downfall, they went to wipe out all gifted individuals and started attacking the packs most known for birthing such pups. They were so paranoid that they even took to attacking talented witches and vampires too, just in case. So as they learnt that two Gifted leaders had a birthed their child, they took that as initiative to attack harder than ever before," He narrated, coming to an end and watching for my reaction.
I wasn't sure how to respond to that.
"Sounds more than just a rumour to me," I muttered dryly. He looked sheepish in that second, ducking his head a little like a child being scolded. "Why didn't you tell me this before?" I asked.
"I didn't think anything like this would happen. I had told you your parents had passed and I thought that was sad enough. I didn't want to burden you," I pursed my lips, my irritation slowly dying the more I thought over his words.
"Well, I have to obviously fulfil that vision," I stated, glancing at a silent Kieran. I couldn't stay here any longer, all leads were pointing south and I needed to investigate myself.
"Yes. We should head south," I looked at my uncle, confused.
"I'm not going to let you go alone. I'm coming with you," Just as I was about to protest, Kieran stepped in, joining the argument.
"He's right. You can't go alone," I looked at him, meeting his blue eyes and seeing the unwavering determination in them as well as the concern.
"Of course," I nodded.
"Great. I'm ready to leave when you are. I'll be waiting in the kitchen," My uncle quickly left and I was suddenly filled with dread.
Sensing my emotions, Kieran was quick to wrap me in his arms and press a kiss to my head. I buried my face in his chest, inhaling as much of his scent as I could, trying to etch every detail into my mind.
It was inevitable that Kieran and I would have to separate.
He had to stay as the alpha of the pack. The trip to Romania had already been too much and there was no doubt he'd have to stay this time. There was no doubt that I'd have to go too.
"Hey, it's alright. You'll be back before you know it," he reassured, though it sounded he was saying it as much to himself as he was saying it to me.
"I'll be back before you know it," I repeated, the words almost sounding like a lie.
I had this horrible feeling that in that moment, my words were the furthest thing from the truth.
