“She insisted that you read it.” Dr Edward voiced out when Cole refused to accept the paper.

“You told me you were going to move us to the same space where we would share a bigger room. What went wrong?”

“It is against policy to keep a patient here against her will when she has recovered. She insisted she needed to be home with her boys. She said being with them will make her completely whole.”

Cole sighed, collecting the paper from him defeatedly.

“This is my sixth attempt to pen down words because I honestly don’t know what to say to you. You saved my l life and I can’t Thank you enough. I would have come to see you but I think it’s best that I didn’t because being with me means I’m putting your life at risk. Please take good care of yourself and recover soon. Hailey.”

Cole took a glance at the Doctor, and Cole spoke. “When am I going to be discharged?”

“We will have to see your progress today and then decide.”

“But you let Hailey go?” Cole said, not believing that he was whining like a child.

“Hailey only suffered from shock and mild scratches but you got a bullet in the arm.”

“But I am fine, I feel fine. You all want me to dance for you so you all can believe me?”

“I can see that you are definitely better but we are still going to keep you here for one to two more days. To carry out tests and all to make sure there will be no future complications with the wound

and your arm.”

“Can’t I have regular appointments instead?”

Edward shook his head.

Cole sighed deeply, not knowing what to say anymore.

“You’ve got a visitor,” The doctor announced.

“I don’t want to see anyone.” He grumbled, shutting his eyes.

“She said her name is Jessie.”

Cole slowly opened his eyes. “Fine, let her in.”

Edward nodded. He approached Cole and spent almost two minutes physically examining his wound, just to verify that it didn’t get wet while taking an assisted bath by the male nurse who was still with them in the room and also that he was healing quickly. He tried to make Cole move his arm too.

Cole didn’t pay attention to what Doctor Edward was doing. Instead, his mind kept going through the words in

the letter he read a while back.

“The nurse will be here shortly with your medications and I’ll check back on you.”

As soon as the Doctor and nurse left the room, Jessie walked in with a food basket.

“Why do you look so grumpy? Are you in pain?” She placed the food basket on the nearby table and approached

Cole.

“Hailey left without seeing me.”

“That’s it?”

“I don’t have any right to be angry because of that?”

“Come on, Cole. Are you saying she should lick your ass just because you saved her?”

“No, that is not what I mean. I was expecting her to show some concern by coming to see me at least. But she left! Just like that as though she didn’t give a fuck!”

“That is strange of her and so impolite.”

“She didn’t send you a text or something?”

“The doctor came here with a letter from her.”

“What does it say?”

Cole took the paper from his pocket and handed it to Jess who instantly read through the words on it.

“Come on, she didn’t run off as you described,” Jessie said, taking a seat on Cole’s bed, the duo facing each

other.

“I am not saying she ran off. She could have made the time to see me before she left.”

“From what I can see here,” Jessie said, taking a glance at the paper. “She is probably embarrassed about everything and this paper contradicts all that you have said and even your mood. She actually appreciates what you did for her.”

“If she didn’t, she would have left again without any trace.” Please check at N/ôvel(D)rama.Org.

“Well She left, didn’t she?”

“Stop being a big baby! How are you?”

“Well, I was fine until I came across the bad news. Dr Edwards was meant to get a bigger room for me and her.”

“So what did you expect if you got the room?”

“We will make up and we will be friends again.”

“I don’t know why her silly boyfriend didn’t tell the hospital that we were a couple when he brought us in.”

“Would you have opened up if you were in his shoes?”

Cole sighed. “I don’t like the fact that she wouldn’t give me a chance to have a proper conversation with her.”

“You got shot because of her. She doesn’t want to put your life at risk!”

“I don’t see it that way. I just want to protect her. You really have to hop on the case, Jess. That bastard stranger pointed–the gun at her. I don’t know why he would want her dead.”

“Thank you. I’ve got two more things to ask of you.”

“Sure, what is it?”

“I need a restraining order against Vanessa and her mother. I also need a restraining order for Hailey against

Vanessa and her mother.”

“I like the sound of that but aren’t you acting too protective?”

“No! If she won’t let me come close to her, the least I can do is to protect her from afar. She has two boys and even though they are not mine, I know they are precious to Hailey so make a restraining order for them too. I don’t trust Vanessa and her mother. I don’t trust Eric either.”

“I know the police are doing their investigation but I already texted someone to find the culprit.”

“Why are you smiling?” Cole stared at his best friend intently.

“This is my first time seeing you so possessive. And I love it. You look more handsome when you talk about Hailey in a possessive way.”

“If only you made the right decision at the very beginning, you wouldn’t be struggling with all of these right

now.”

“You don’t need not throw my past in my face. I definitely learned my lesson the hard way.”

“I am not trying to mock you, Cole. I can see that you make so much effort and it warms my heart. It is my dream that everything comes together for you.”

“Yeah, I hope so too. And if it doesn’t eventually, I will know that I gave it my all.”

Jess nodded in agreement.

“So what is the third favor?” She asked him.

“Help me escape from here.”

“That’s not possible.” She shook her head.

“Please, just come up with something.”

“I’m just a lawyer, dude. The doctors know better that is why they are keeping you here.”

“It is easy for you to say. Vanessa’s going to come here again and I am not going to hear the end of it.”

“You don’t have to let her in. Just give the reception the order.”

“You don’t know Vanessa. She will definitely find her way. She and her mother.”

“I will try my best to get the order on time but in the meantime, please stay as far away from them as possible.

Be ruthless if you can be. Both mother and daughter seem really desperate and I don’t trust them.”

The Next Day!

“Mama?!” Enzo called.

“Yes, baby.” She answered, looking away from the TV and turning her attention to her son.

They were all on the couch, watching the twins‘ favorite cartoon. Hailey was in the middle, Enzo to her left, and Oliver to her right.

“Have you gotten any news about Dada? You promised you were going to look for him.”

“Yes, Mommy. When is Daddy coming?” Oliver chipped in.

Hailey mentally facepalmed. “I have no information yet. But soon.”

“What’s wrong, Enzo?” She asked upon seeing his sad face.

“You are not being truthful, mommy.”

“Yes, mommy,” Ollie added.

Hailey had no idea why but it hurts to

“No.” Hailey shook her head.

“Why will you guys ask me that?”

“We saw a picture on your phone.” They said in unison.

Hailey’s heart dropped. “What picture?”

“Picture of a man. We guessed he was our Daddy.” Enzo said.

“The article says he lives in our city,” Ollie added.

“What article?” Hailey looked at her sons, confused.

“The one on your phone.”

Hailey nodded, finally understanding her boys. She probably forgot to clear her browser history and they saw Cole’s picture when playing with her phone.

“Yes, mommy, is he the one?” Ollie stared at his mother curiously.

Hailey parted her lips, unsure of what to say when the sound of the doorbell sound came through.

“…I have to get that.” Hailey said, not waiting for permission from her boys. She tossed the blanket aside and got down from the sofa.

Even though it was weird that someone was by her door at this time of the night, Hailey didn’t mind going to answer it because she had no idea what to say to her boys.

She got to the door, unlocked and opened it, coming face to face with who she never expected!

She froze.
