Chapter 1393 Will He Be Sentenced
Although the words were merely pretenses spoken for the occasion, Josie felt a pang of sorrow in her heart upon hearing them. The person next to Dexter teased Grape, "Kid, do your mommy and daddy always talk like this? They're so polite to each other." Grape's eyes darted around.
Josie clenched the hem of her clothes, her heart racing wildly. If Grape were to say anything out of line, everything would be over. Dexter tightened his grip around Grape, who responded, "They rarely see each other..."
This was indeed the truth. Josie breathed a sigh of relief. Grape was smart.
The person wore a slightly disappointed expression and said in a low voice, "Poor child."
Dexter put Grape down, gently patting her head. "Good girl, I have some work to finish up. Go home with Mommy first."
Grape was reluctant to let go. "When will you be coming back?"
"I'll go back when I'm done here." Dexter glanced at Josie. "If you can't handle it, seek help from the Russell family." Josie tried her best to stay calm. "Who specifically?"
"Ms. Marilyn. She's been taking care of Grandpa for years, and she loves children. She would do a good job."
"Okay."
Dexter stood up, his black trench coat carrying a faint scent of tobacco. He stood in the dimly lit shadows, looking significantly more haggard than before.
Josie held onto Grape and a sudden thought struck her. "Ms. Marilyn hasn't been in good health and she's always been worried about you. If she asks when you'll be back... what should I tell her?"
Her eyes were bright and filled with anticipation as she awaited his response.
He remained silent for half a minute before squeezing out a smile. "We'll see."
Josie's heart sank heavily.
Morgan's car was still outside, but he was no longer the driver. Instead, it was now Ryan behind the wheel.
Grape was in a much better mood after seeing Dexter. As she nestled in Josie's arms, she said, "I've never met this man before."
Ryan glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
He made several loops around the overpass before he was able to shake off the plainclothes officers tailing him.
Morgan was still waiting for her on the bridge by the city moat. His tall figure seemed especially small in the open space.
Josie left Grape in the car after assuring her that she would return shortly.
She jogged toward the bridge, where Morgan was casually leaning against a stone pillar, looking at her with an air of boredom. "Now that you've seen him, you can relax, right?"
"Will he be sentenced under these circumstances?" Josie asked through gritted teeth.
She had seen him, but it only made her more worried.
Morgan chuckled. "You're thinking too far ahead. Are you really that worried?"
Josie pursed her lips. "I'm just afraid that the child won't have a father."
"I could be her father."
"Morgan!" Josie gave him a kick.
Morgan smiled and collected
himself. "I'm not sure about the sentencing, but given his current situation, it's almost like house arrest. He'll probably be stuck in Wavery for quite some time. He thought that by completely dealing with Preston, everything would be fine. But the higher-ups are intentionally making things difficult for him. If he thinks he can escape, he's simply dreaming."
Josie's heart pounded faster. "You made a promise to me. I secure the project for you, and you hand over the evidence of the crime."
After a brief silence, Morgan narrowed his eyes. "I can't tell what you're thinking. Is Dexter that important to you?"
"I told you, it's for the child."
"Josie, you may deceive others, but you can't fool me."
The piercing sound of the wind resonated in his ears, sweeping directly into his heart and leaving behind a void that throbbed with pain.

"Morgan, at least he doesn't deserve this fate," Josie said seriously, her words laced with both plea and request.
For a fleeting moment, Morgan's heart nearly softened.
