Hunter raised an eyebrow. "What exactly do you mean by that?"
Mia smiled calmly. "Just what I said. Make sure you remember it."
She glanced at her restrained hands and added casually, "Oh, and since we're done here, could you take off this tie and let me go?"
There was a coolness in her voice, as if nothing had happened between them. Without responding, Hunter opened the car door and stepped out.
Sam kept his distance, not wanting to overhear anything he shouldn't, but his focus remained on Hunter. When he saw Hunter step out of the car, he quickly approached and respectfully greeted him, "Mr. Jasper."
"Check the Haven Highway last night. I want to know if anything unusual happened, and I also want Mia's hospital records from the past few days." Hunter wasn't dismissing Mia's words completely but trusted hard evidence more than her explanations. Though Sam found the request odd, he dutifully replied, "Understood."
As Sam made the calls, Hunter leaned against the car, smoking. For some reason, he couldn't stop thinking about that mark on Mia's neck. It gnawed at him, leaving him agitated.
Inside the car, Mia rubbed her wrists against the seat, trying to loosen the tie that bound her hands. Her eyes drifted to the window, catching Hunter's handsome side profile through the glass.
This was the man she had loved for nine long years, the one whose face had filled her dreams. Yet now, as they stood on the verge of ending everything, it didn't hurt as much as she had imagined.
Sam worked quickly, and soon enough, the surveillance footage was ready. Hunter took the laptop from Sam, playing the videos.
It took him half an hour to watch both clips. During that time, Mia had managed to free herself, smooth her clothes, and slip out of the car unnoticed. She quietly shut the door and ran. Hearing movement, Hunter turned to look at her. Sam started to chase after her when she slipped out of the car, but Hunter called out, "Don't bother. Let her go!"
Sam immediately halted. Handing the laptop back to Sam, Hunter rubbed his temples, sighing, "Head back to the office."
After watching the video and confirming that everything Mia had said was true, Hunter was left grappling with the weight of his previous hurtful words and actions toward her. He wasn't sure how to face her anymore.
Back at the office, Hunter sat with a file in front of him, but he couldn't focus on a single word. His mind was consumed with the image of Mia's broken state from the video and how desperately she had fled from him. An unfamiliar sense of frustration gnawed at him. At lunchtime, Sam came in with a phone. "Mr. Jasper, it's Miss Walker."
Hunter didn't look up from his files. His voice was sharp, "What does she want now?"
"She mentioned she'd like you to join her tonight for fireworks, to celebrate her birthday." Chapter 0033
Sam spoke cautiously, feeling the tension in the room. He knew Jenna had been pushing her lock around Hunter lately, and even he felt secondhand anxiety from it.
Hunter's tone was cold, "From now on, if she wants to do something just handle it. Don't bother me with
it."
Without waiting for a reply, Hunter signed the last page of the document. Then a thought crossed his mind. Mia's birthday was coming up soon, and he still hadn't transferred the shares that his grandfather had promised her.
Closing the file, he capped his pen and instructed, "Get in touch with Mia. Tell her to come to the office 1 have something important to discuss with her."
Sam didn't question what this 'important matter was and left to make the call.
Mia, busy preparing her court documents, noticed the unfamiliar number ringing and absentmindedly ht the speakerphone.
