Chapter 57

My back was aching from sitting in this chair. The council shut hours ago, yet still they were in deliberations. I stretch my arms above my head, turning my head to spot Harlow walking into the room. Rhen had taken her to stretch her legs and get her something to eat when we realized this was going to take longer than expected.
My eyes trail over her, and a smirk splits onto my face as my eyes take in her tan legs, my eyes roam over her, stopping at her face. She raises an eyebrow at me, catching me spying on her.
Harlow moves to one of the pews and I wiggle my finger at her to come to me, she purses her lips but wanders over, glancing nervously at the council Elders who hadn’t even noticed them leave and they were too busy arguing to notice her return. Harlow stops next to my chair.
My arm snakes around her hips, and I squeeze her ass. Harlow glares at me, but the Elders weren’t paying attention to us, nor would they see anything with the high-desk I was sitting at.
“More comfortable?” I ask her, and her cheeks flame as she peeks at the council members. As if she were worried, they would overhear and understand the question I asked her. She nods her head.
“Hopefully it won’t be much longer, or do you want me to have Raidon come and get you?” I ask her. We had offered multiple times, but she insisted on staying, wanting to hear the verdict.
“No, I want to stay,” she whispers, and I nod, letting her go. I incline my head to the chair beside me, but she shakes her head. I nod for her to go until I notice her skin laced with goosebumps. They had the air- conditioning on in here, and even Clara and Jackie complained about the temperature being too cold earlier. I barely felt the cold, yet it was obvious Harlow was freezing. Reaching out, I grip her hand and she stops, turning her attention to me. “I want to stay,” she assures me.
Harlow was only wearing a little black dress, making me notice the tinge of blue on her skin. I shake my head, shrugging off my suit jacket to see Rhen doing the same; he tosses his arms up in the air, realizing I am giving her mine.
Yep, she was definitely cold. She wastes no time taking it from me and moving back to the seating behind me and taking her seat.
Rhen places a cappuccino on the desk I’m sitting at before retaking his seat beside me. I take a sip, watching Milena and Clara arguing with Thomas, Cole, and Martin about what they believe is the best course of action.
“We already know the decision. The rest we can figure out. Or you could just ask, we don’t know unless we do,” Milena speaks up loud enough for me to look at the judges’ table. Milena folds her arms across her chest, waiting for Elder Cole to ask his question. So I turn to the old man, giving him my attention.
Cole I have known since I was a kid, he was friends with my fathers, yet they shared vastly different views on Omegas. My fathers just weren’t as vocal about their point of view, which was my mother’s downfall in the council. Instead, she had to resort to blackmailing and digging up dirt on the officials, and in the end, that got her killed. So if answering more questions got us out of this place faster, I would see what they had to say.
For four hours, they argued over which laws to erase and which to keep before it finally went to a vote. They knew what mine was, so they didn’t bother asking. I grab the documents, getting ready to hand them over if needed again.
“Before we vote, Mr. Keller?” Elder Cole asks and I lift my head from the paperwork I was sorting. Nôvel/Dr(a)ma.Org - Content owner.
“Yes?” I ask him, wanting to get this over with.
“Exactly what do you plan on doing with these Omegas? If we make this a safe-haven for Omegas. We will have them coming from all over the country seeking refuge to get out of their obligations.”
“The Omega refuge. I have already doubled the crews. So it should be completed by next week.” I answer, yet even I knew that wouldn’t house the amount of Omegas that would travel here to seek refuge.
“How many can it house?” Milena asks, glancing up from her documents.
“Roughly three hundred, maybe more.” She nods her head and purses her lips.
“It won’t be big enough. We’ll have to figure something out.” Elder Cole speaks, his brows furrowing as he flicks through a folder. Council member Tatum leans over, tossing a document in front of Cole.
“We can divert council funds. With the Omegas coming here, we should be able to afford to divert funds and push a few community projects back until next year. Them coming here won’t necessarily be a bad thing. It will draw attention to the city, tourists, and alphas looking for Omegas, and that revenue can also be chucked into extra security, and paying back the council funds, but we can also put some aside into a fund for the Omegas?” He tells Cole, who nods his head.
“Is there a fund? How do you plan on running this refuge?” Tatum asks, turning in his seat to look at me.
However, it is Rhen that gets up, moving toward the council table. He hands them a folder. “The Keller family has been putting aside half the company’s net income aside since Hana first petitioned; that hasn’t changed since Thane took over. Each month, money has been set aside, invested, and pushed back into the fund. The interest gained on those funds alone is enough to cover the refuge expenses.” “What about schooling? These women – as you said – at before, have had no proper education since least twelve and that is not including orphaned Omegas raised in these facilities?” Clara, another council member, asks.
