Branch Seventy Nine
Dawson was on the phone with Ethan. He knew that shipping them both there would not do the trick of bringing them together. His grandson was stubborn and closed off. His granddaughter-in-law would not make a move because of the distance that Xavier had put between them. They needed a push and Ethan was the perfect man for the job.
“You only call me when it is time for investments. I thought we were friends Dawson?” Ethan says with a teasing voice.
“And you answer every time” Dawson continued.
Silence ensued on the phone before both men burst out laughing. They were the ones who took the small companies or their grandparents to greater heights. They were buddies and confidants.
“Do you feel better? Are you coming to Aurora Haven? I hated that I had to interact with your secretary the last time” Ethan expresses with a gruff in his voice.
“I am afraid I can’t make it this time also. It is a bit difficult for me to travel such a distance in this state” Dawson explained.
“So you are sending the secretary again?” Ethan said with a sigh.
The secretary was too serious and did not stay a few moments. Ethan was a lonely man. His children said they hated his business so they did every other thing apart from his business. When he hoped for his grandchildren. They all went into the entertainment industry claiming there was better money there.
In annoyance, he had cut them all off and ensured that none of them would be able to inherit from him. After all, why should they inherit from a business they do not like? Ethan often looked forward to meeting with Dawson and other business partners. That way he had fun once in a while. This was the reason he insisted on having the meeting at his place.
“Don’t send him please” Ethan cried over the phone. “I would come over instead. It’s been ages since I went to Chiachester City” Ethan said.
“I was thinking of sending my grandson and his wife instead but seems like you coming here is a better idea” Dawson teased.
“Your grandson and wife?” Ethan asked in amusement.
He knew Xavier so well that he concluded he would never be able to find love on his own. It was a strange string of words to have wife attached to him.
“Yes, he got married low-key about two months ago. I think it is time he met you officially as the company owner”
“Is there another reason you are sending them both here?” Ethan asked catching up quickly.
If he wanted him to meet his grandson and wife officially then meeting them in Chiachester was not a bad idea at all but the idea of sending them to Aurora Haven must have a big reason behind it.
“I need help,” Dawson said curtly.
“Of course you do. You made it obvious” Ethan teased.
“I want you to keep them there for as long as a week or more”
“Why?” Now Ethan was curious. Something was up.
“I want them to spend it as their honeymoon”
“Oh really? Is it a marriage of convenience?”
“Yes”
“Ahhhh” Burke heard a scream from the kitchen.
He hurried out of the room to the kitchen where Emma was seated on the small dining table in the kitchen. Her phone was on the table and her hair was all over the place with tears in her eyes.
“What is it?” Burke asked worried as he walked in haste to her. “What is it?” he asked again which led to began a full-on sobbing.
She did not respond but cried as if her life depended on it.
“Why are you crying?” he asked again holding her close to him.
His eyes shifted to the phone on the table and saw a picture of Jessica and her husband smiling for the camera.
“How is it that I settled for you?” she asked in between sobs.
“How is it that I lost Jessica?” he asked in a murmur.
“What?” Emma asked when she caught a whiff of what she said.
“How is it that I lost Jessica to a jerk like him?” he repeated.
She was the one who assured him that Jessica would always be there for him. She assured him that she would forgive him even if he did not show up on their wedding day. How did it turn out that the same Jessica now ended up wedded on that same day?Contentt bel0ngs to N0ve/lDrâ/ma.O(r)g!
“How dare you say that?” Emma said angry.
There was no real reason she was angry. She was just jealous of Jessica and the life she was currently living. She went from being a lowly chef to being the wife of the richest man in Chiachester City.
Emma would have been content with getting married to anyone who worked in the big offices of their city but here was Jessica the one who was beneath her bagging the men and going to parties.
“Emma you caused this mess for both of us. If I had not listened to you when you told me to ignore her on the wedding day then I would not be in this mess”
“Mess?” Emma said standing up with a shout. “Are you referring to me and our child as a mess?” she added now outraged.
“Yes, this mess. I am almost throat-deep in debt because you want a star wedding that you can even afford and I can’t take it anymore,” he shouted back.
He had allowed her to have her way but with the rate of things he might end up in the police cell because of fraud.
“Burke don’t you dare start what you can’t finish” she screamed.
He began to wonder how they got there. Perhaps it was bottled-up emotions from all that had happened in the past few days.
“Emma I am done with you. I want and choose peace. I can’t borrow any more money. I can’t stay or even be with you anymore” he said silently with tears in his eyes.
“Same here” she screamed and took her phone from the table before storming out.
“What did I just do?”
