Chapter 13 My Little Bear God
Before boarding the plane to the United States, I sent a few packages to my family.
On December 31st, I was about to celebrate New Year’s Eve on the plane.
“Attention to passengers traveling to the New York area in the United States. Your flight is about to depart. Please have your carry-on items ready, show your boarding pass, and proceed to Gate 01 for boarding.”
I picked up my few pieces of luggage and headed towards the boarding gate.

Ashburn’s voice came from behind me, but I didn’t want to turn around.
At this point, things could have been let go for both of us. Why entangle ourselves further and drag ourselves into a quagmire?
But Ashburn didn’t see it that way. He must obtain what he wanted.
So, he grabbed me, preventing me from leaving.
Fifteen minutes later, the cabin would be closed. We had only fifteen minutes.
“Don’t go.”
I looked at him, and his eyes were filled with anxiety.
“Ashy, I’m not never coming back. I’m just going for further studies.”
Ashburn shook his head. He understood that my leaving now meant completely letting go.
“Then, what does the letter and the wedding dress you left mean?”
“Gifts for you and Sophia. I designed them myself. If they don’t fit, have them adjusted.”
Sadness showed in Ashburn’s eyes. Perhaps he also didn’t understand why we had come to this point today.
But I understood more than he did. Between the two of us, cowardice outweighed courage.
“You know I don’t like her.”
“What does that matter?” I smiled. “Ashy, not everyone can be with the one they like.”
“Sometimes, it’s just that split second, or maybe just one word. Do you understand?”
I thought Ashburn was smarter than me; he must have understood by now.
I boarded the plane heading to New York as I counted down to the arrival of the New Year:
“5, 4, 3, 2, 1”
“I hope I never love Ashburn again.”
“I hope my little teddy bear remains forever a god.”
